The design of the outdoor space between schools represents a great opportunity for urban change. Enhancing soil permeability through the removal and recycling of bituminous material and the installation of more draining materials helps to limit the urban heat island effect. The analysis of the current state led to a redesign of spaces, previously allocated for cars, in favor of those for people, featuring surfaces with green areas, draining pavements, and urban furniture. In two years, 4400 sqm of bituminous conglomerate were removed, which was recovered and became asphalt milling. For greater soil permeability and aquifer enrichment, 1950 sqm of draining concrete, 1990 sqm of green lawn, 220 sqm of area with herbaceous and creeping plants, and 120 sqm of prefabricated grid slab flooring for bike areas were installed. This intervention resulted in an increase in soil permeability by about 60%. To encourage the presence of users in the area and suggest moments of socialization and outdoor education, 120 trees and 680 herbaceous and creeping plant species were planted to ensure greater shade and sensory well-being. The implementation of the project led to a considerable reduction in the urban heat island effect in the area and an increase in comfort near and within the school buildings.
