The project is based on the strongest and most legible visual and historical-symbolic emergencies: the railway station, the Alpini staircase. The visual relationship between the square, the station, and the Alpini staircase is taken up in the project to strengthen the relationships between the open space (intended for diversified activities for the community) and the buildings facing it, which are largely intended for tertiary and/or commercial functions. The proposal identifies the morphological features of the city of Conegliano, highlighting the unified character of the urban space. The area covered by the competition, which has remained almost unchanged over time in its urban layout, contains within it the urban and civic history of the entire city. The design choices of the "formal" and "substantial" layout resume routes and alignments that connect it to the different historical phases of urbanization and construction of the square. To the urban structure of the 12th century, entirely focused on the territorial control of the castle, was later added a new city plan with the crossing of the railway and the Strada Maestra d’Italia. Piazza Giosuè Carducci, almost indifferent to building transformations, has represented and can thus represent a generative model for the aggregation of permanent activities (commercial, outdoor seating, tourist hospitality, newsstand) and periodic or occasional activities (events, market, gatherings). The system of "figures" chosen for the design of the square is inspired by a formal hierarchy of Main Street and Secondary Streets, with the only pauses identified by the green spaces, placed at the sides, which will accommodate possible trees (to be recovered or newly planted).

The overall design is developed using a few materials combined and intertwined: porphyry slabs laid in running bond and with variable size and height; natural river pebbles set in cement grout; granite blocks; green areas in geometric patterns confined within the dimensions of the running porphyry. The proposal for the entire area, without elevations or architectural barriers on the pavement, is completely pedestrian, except for the occasional access to the Europa condominium, controlled by hydraulic bollards—remotely operated road barriers. The planned construction elements are intended to complete the unitary morphology of the square, introducing elements of geometric conformation derived from the building partitions of the buildings facing the new square. The preservation and cultural value of the spatial unity of the square are maintained and reinforced by the absence of tall elements that would be out of scale, with only the addition of some trees, which have always characterized the historical memory of this space. Exceptions are the boundaries of the square area: to the north with granite benches and bollards; to the south by the location of the new newsstand and the canopy (covered with photovoltaic panels) for bicycle charging and parking. Lighting is provided both in a punctual (spot) and multiple (strip) manner, as needed, with LED light fixtures attached to cables and overhead wires stretched between the buildings on both sides of the square. Integrated into the overhead lighting system is a canopy structure attached to the suspended cables, echoing the ground design and offering a covered walkway along the Corte delle Rose side.
